Another lawsuit
Posted on April 28th, 2012 No commentsWhile telecom giants are fighting in court for patents and even Apple’s trademark on the name iPad, some shake … emoticons. So, know that Samsung and Research in Motion, maker of BlackBerry terminals were given in court by Varia Holdings because they use emoticons on their terminals and keyboards that without permission.
The problem here seems to be a virtual key quick access to emoticons on smartphones such as Nexus Galaxy or the latest BlackBerry’s. Given the theme of this process, ie a change, I expect these companies to reach an agreement outside the courtroom, for a modest sum. That if there emerges any earlier patent Samsung / RIM indicating possession of emoticons. It would be the first time a company claim ownership of a technology that did not even invent it, much like Apple did with the slide to unlock.
Let’s see how this case evolves, although most likely Varia Holdings wants to gain publicity and fanfare, rather than out some modest amounts of pockets Samsung and RIM. There are so many sets of emoticons that I’m sure that some money would license would find others to take their place … perhaps less annoying this time.
